E10 stands for Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol, an energy abbreviation.
Standard gasoline blend containing up to 10% ethanol, sold at most US gas stations and, since 2021, as standard unleaded in the United Kingdom. Ethanol raises octane and replaces part of the fossil fuel, mostly from corn in the US and sugar beet or wheat in Europe.
Example: Pump labels read "May contain up to 10% ethanol," meaning the fuel is E10.
Usage notes
All gasoline cars built in recent decades can use E10, but some owners of older vehicles, boats and small engines prefer ethanol-free fuel because ethanol absorbs water. E15, with up to 15% ethanol, is approved for most cars built since 2001. The US Renewable Fuel Standard drives most ethanol blending.
