EVSE stands for Electric vehicle supply equipment, an energy abbreviation.

Formal term for EV charging equipment, including the charging station, cable, connector and control electronics that safely deliver power from the grid to a vehicle. Building codes, utility rebates and electricians use EVSE rather than "charger," since the actual charger for AC charging sits inside the car.

Example: The permit covers installation of a 48-amp Level 2 EVSE on a dedicated 60-amp circuit.

Usage notes

Level 1 EVSE uses a standard 120-volt outlet in North America, adding only a few kilometers of range per hour, while Level 2 uses 240 volts. The North American Level 2 connector was standardized as SAE J1772. EVSE communicates with the car to set a safe charging current before energizing the cable.
