HEV stands for Hybrid electric vehicle, an automotive abbreviation also used in science.
Vehicle combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor and small battery that charges from the engine and regenerative braking, with no plug. HEVs cut fuel use sharply in city driving, where the engine can switch off.
Example: The HEV version of the RAV4 averages about 40 mpg in town.
Usage notes
The Toyota Prius, launched in Japan in 1997 and worldwide in 2000, made hybrids mainstream. Marketers sometimes call them "self-charging hybrids," a term criticized by advertising regulators in some countries. HEVs differ from PHEVs, which have larger batteries that can be plugged in, and from mild hybrids (MHEV), which cannot drive on electric power alone.
