GVWR stands for Gross vehicle weight rating, an automotive abbreviation.
Maximum safe total weight of a vehicle, including the vehicle itself, passengers, cargo and trailer tongue weight, set by the manufacturer and printed on the driver's door jamb. Exceeding GVWR overloads brakes, tires and suspension.
Example: With the camper on the bed, the truck was 600 pounds over its GVWR.
Usage notes
GVWR determines US vehicle classes, from Class 1 (up to 6,000 pounds) to Class 8 (more than 33,000 pounds). Vehicles with GVWRs of 26,001 pounds or more generally require a commercial driver's license. Payload capacity is GVWR minus the vehicle's curb weight.
