1. Gross domestic income
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations
Total income generated by domestic production, including wages, profits, rents and taxes on production, measured from the income side rather than the spending side. In theory it equals GDP, but in practice the two differ because of measurement gaps.
Example: GDI grew more slowly than GDP last year, raising doubts about the strength of the expansion.
The difference between GDP and GDI is called the statistical discrepancy. Some economists, including researchers at the Federal Reserve, argue that averaging the two gives a better estimate of growth. The US Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes GDI alongside GDP, though with a lag for the fourth quarter.
2. Gasoline direct injection
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Fuel system that injects gasoline at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber rather than into the intake port, improving efficiency and power. Most new gasoline engines use direct injection.
Example: GDI engines can build up carbon on the intake valves, so ask about walnut blasting at 80,000 miles.
Mitsubishi introduced modern GDI in a production car in 1996. Because fuel no longer washes over the intake valves, carbon deposits can accumulate, which some makers solve by adding port injectors as well. GDI engines emit more fine particles than port-injected engines, leading Europe to require gasoline particulate filters. Brand names include TSI, EcoBoost and SkyActiv-G.
