CategoriesBusiness & Finance

GNI stands for Gross national income, an economics abbreviation.

Total income earned by a country's residents and businesses, including wages, profits and investment returns from abroad, minus similar payments to non-residents. The World Bank uses GNI per capita to classify countries as low-, middle- or high-income.

Example: Once its GNI per capita passed the World Bank's threshold, the country moved into the high-income group.

Usage notes

The World Bank converts GNI to US dollars using its Atlas method, which smooths exchange-rate swings, and updates its income thresholds every July. Ireland publishes a modified measure, GNI*, to strip out distortions from multinational accounting. GNI is conceptually close to the older GNP.
