GNP stands for Gross national product, an economics abbreviation.
Total value of final goods and services produced by a country's residents and businesses, wherever in the world they operate, in a given period. It equals GDP plus income residents earn from abroad minus income paid to foreign residents.
Example: Ireland's GDP far exceeds its GNP because profits booked there by multinationals flow back to foreign owners.
Usage notes
The United States used GNP as its headline measure until 1991, when it switched to GDP to match international practice. In modern national accounts, GNP has largely been replaced by the conceptually similar gross national income (GNI). The gap between GDP and GNP is large for countries with heavy foreign investment or many workers abroad.
