CategoriesBusiness & Finance

JOLTS stands for Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, an economics abbreviation.

Monthly US Bureau of Labor Statistics survey measuring job openings, hires, quits and layoffs, giving a picture of labor demand and worker mobility beyond the headline jobs numbers. Data are released with about a one-month lag.

Example: JOLTS showed job openings falling to 7.4 million, close to the number of unemployed workers.

Usage notes

The quits rate is watched as a sign of worker confidence, since people quit more when they expect to find better jobs. The ratio of openings to unemployed people peaked at about two in 2022. Fed officials cite JOLTS when judging labor-market tightness. Pronounced "jolts."
