1. Gigatonne

Units & Measurements · Metric and SI Unit Abbreviations

One billion tonnes, the headline unit for global carbon emissions, carbon budgets and ice-sheet loss. Total human-caused CO2 emissions, including land use, are roughly 40 Gt per year.

Example: Greenland lost an average of about 270 Gt of ice per year over the past two decades.

About 360 Gt of melted land ice raises global sea level by roughly 1 mm. Climate reports write GtCO2 for carbon dioxide and GtC for carbon alone; multiply GtC by 3.67 to get GtCO2. In American news coverage, gigatons and billion tons are used interchangeably.

2. Georgia Institute of Technology (GT)

Education & Academia · University Abbreviations

Georgia Tech, a public research university in Midtown Atlanta founded in 1885, known for engineering, computing and its "Ramblin' Wreck" traditions. Its Yellow Jackets compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Example: She completed GT's online master's in computer science while working at a bank.

The university brands itself "Georgia Tech". Its online MSCS, launched in 2014, made a top program available for less than $10,000. In schools, GT more often means gifted and talented.

3. Gifted and talented (GT)

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Programs and services for students identified as having high ability or achievement, such as pull-out enrichment, advanced classes, acceleration and magnet schools. Identification methods and services vary widely because there is no federal mandate.

Example: She was identified as GT in second grade and attends a weekly enrichment class.

Also written G/T, especially in Texas, which requires districts to identify and serve gifted students. Common screening tools include the CogAT, NNAT and achievement tests. Many districts now screen all students universally to reduce bias in parent and teacher referrals.

4. Gran Turismo (GT)

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Badge for a car designed for fast, comfortable long-distance driving, from the Italian for "grand touring." Today GT labels range from luxury coupes to sporty trims of mainstream models, such as the Ford Mustang GT.

Example: The Mustang GT gets the V8, while the base car has a turbocharged four-cylinder.

The term comes from the grand tour, the European journey of wealthy young travelers in past centuries. Early GT cars included the Alfa Romeo and Lancia models of the 1930s to 1950s. "GT" racing classes exist in sports car endurance racing. In maritime use, GT means gross tonnage, an unrelated meaning.

5. Gross tonnage (GT)

Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations

Dimensionless index of a ship's overall internal volume, calculated under the 1969 International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships. It is used for registration, safety rules, manning requirements and port fees, and it is the standard size measure for cruise ships.

Example: Icon of the Seas, at 248,663 GT, became the world's largest cruise ship in 2024.

Despite the name, gross tonnage is not a weight. It replaced gross register tonnage (GRT) under the 1969 convention, which entered into force in 1982. Many international rules apply only above certain GT thresholds, such as 300 or 500 GT. In cars, GT means Gran Turismo, an unrelated meaning.

6. Gastrostomy tube (GT)

Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations

Feeding and medication route through a tube placed directly through the abdominal wall into the stomach, by endoscopy (PEG), radiology or surgery. Patients with long-term swallowing problems receive nutrition, water and liquid or crushed medications this way.

Example: Levetiracetam 500 mg via GT BID; flush with 15 mL water before and after.

Also written G-tube. Each medication should be given separately and the tube flushed between drugs to prevent clogging and interactions. Phenytoin binds to enteral feeds, so feeds are often held around doses. Do not confuse with "gtt" (drops or drip).

7. Great (Gt.)

Geography & Places · Geographic Feature Abbreviations

Used in British place names and map labels, as in Gt. Yarmouth or Gt. Missenden, where it often distinguishes a larger settlement from a nearby Little one.

Example: The coach stops at Gt. Yarmouth before continuing to Lowestoft.

Many English villages come in pairs, such as Great and Little Shelford. Gt. was common on railway timetables and signposts, and Gt. Britain appears in older atlases.

8. Guatemala (GT)

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Guatemala, the most populous country in Central America, has Guatemala City as its capital and many speakers of Mayan languages. Tikal and other Maya sites draw visitors; GTM is the alpha-3 code.

Example: Coffee bags from Antigua, GT are prized for their volcanic-soil flavor.

GT also abbreviates gran turismo in car names. The quetzal, Guatemala's currency, is named after its national bird.

9. Gamertag (GT)

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations

Username on Xbox Live and some other gaming networks, shown on profiles, leaderboards and friend lists. Players share GTs to connect across games.

Example: What's your GT? I'll send you an invite to the party.

Microsoft introduced gamertags with Xbox Live in 2002, and changing one used to cost money. In cars GT means "grand tourer," and in other contexts "gross tonnage" or "Georgia Tech," which the gaming setting rules out.
