CategoriesTransportation & Travel

GRT stands for Gross register tonnage, a maritime abbreviation.

Older measure of a ship's internal volume, in which one register ton equals 100 cubic feet (about 2.83 cubic meters). RMS Titanic, for example, measured 46,328 GRT.

Example: Historic records list the liner at 81,000 GRT, but modern figures use gross tonnage instead.

Usage notes

GRT was replaced by gross tonnage under the 1969 tonnage convention, phased in from 1982 to 1994. Comparing historic ships measured in GRT with modern ships in GT can mislead, though the figures are broadly similar. The register ton originated in measuring cargo capacity by barrels of wine (tuns).
