FPSO stands for Floating production storage and offloading unit, a maritime abbreviation.
Ship-shaped offshore facility that receives oil and gas from undersea wells, processes it, stores the oil and offloads it to tankers. FPSOs are widely used off Brazil, West Africa and in the North Sea.
Example: The new FPSO off Guyana can produce 250,000 barrels of oil a day.
Usage notes
FPSOs are often converted from old tankers or purpose-built in Asian shipyards. They are useful where pipelines to shore are impractical. Some can disconnect and sail away from hurricanes.
