ECDIS stands for Electronic Chart Display and Information System, a maritime abbreviation.
Approved electronic navigation system that displays official electronic charts with the ship's position, radar overlays and route plans, and can replace paper charts. ECDIS has been mandatory on most large ships since the 2010s.
Example: The officer cross-checked the ECDIS route against the pilot's plan for the river passage.
Usage notes
SOLAS phased in the requirement between 2012 and 2018 by ship type and size. Crews need type-specific training. Groundings in which officers misused ECDIS settings, such as safety contour alarms, prompted guidance from investigators.
