SOLAS stands for International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, a maritime abbreviation.
Most important international treaty on merchant ship safety, covering construction, fire protection, lifeboats, radio equipment, navigation and cargo safety. Its first version was adopted in 1914 in response to the Titanic disaster.
Example: Under SOLAS, the cruise ship must carry lifeboats and life rafts for everyone aboard plus a margin.
Usage notes
The current convention dates from 1974 and is regularly amended. Pronounced "SOH-lass." It requires lifeboat drills, emergency radio systems and, since 2016, verification of container weights. Nearly all of the world's merchant tonnage is flagged in states that are party to it.
