1. Ultra large crude carrier
Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations
Largest class of oil tanker, above about 320,000 deadweight tonnes. Few remain in service because their size limits the ports and routes they can use.
Example: At 458 meters, the ULCC Seawise Giant was the longest ship ever built.
The Seawise Giant, completed in 1979 and later renamed Jahre Viking and Knock Nevis, was nearly sunk in the Iran-Iraq War and scrapped in 2010. Most oil trade has shifted to VLCCs, which are more flexible. In aviation, ULCC means ultra-low-cost carrier.
2. Ultra-low-cost carrier
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Airline that pushes the low-cost model further, offering the lowest base fares and charging separately for nearly everything else, including carry-on bags, seat assignments and drinks. US examples include Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air.
Example: The ULCC fare was $39, but the carry-on bag and seat selection added another $90.
ULCCs typically have tightly packed cabins with non-reclining seats and extract a large share of revenue from ancillary fees. The term became common in the US in the 2010s. In shipping, ULCC is an unrelated term for an ultra large crude carrier, the biggest class of oil tanker.
