USS stands for United States Ship, a naval ship abbreviation also used in transportation.
Prefix for commissioned ships of the US Navy, placed before the ship's name, as in USS Gerald R. Ford. It applies only while a ship is in commission with a Navy crew.
Example: USS Gerald R. Ford returned to Norfolk after an eight-month deployment.
Usage notes
President Theodore Roosevelt standardized the prefix by executive order in 1907. Ships under construction or decommissioned are referred to without it, and noncommissioned Navy ships crewed by civilians use USNS. In writing, the prefix is not italicized, while the ship's name often is.
