DDG stands for Guided-missile destroyer, a naval ship abbreviation.
Destroyers armed with guided missiles carry this symbol, chiefly the Arleigh Burke class, the backbone of the surface fleet, which carries the Aegis combat system and vertical launch cells for air defense, missile defense and strike.
Example: The DDG intercepted several missiles fired toward commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
Usage notes
DD means destroyer and G guided missile. The Arleigh Burke class is the largest post-World War II US surface combatant class, with dozens in service since 1991. The three Zumwalt-class ships use DDG as well. Destroyers take their name from the earlier "torpedo boat destroyers."
