FFG stands for Guided-missile frigate, a naval ship abbreviation.
Frigates armed with guided missiles carry this US Navy designation; they are smaller and less expensive than destroyers and used for escort and anti-submarine missions. The Oliver Hazard Perry class served from 1977 to 2015.
Example: The FFG escorted the convoy through the Strait of Hormuz in 1988.
Usage notes
The letters combine FF for frigate with G for guided missile. Perry-class frigates included USS Stark, hit by Iraqi missiles in 1987, and USS Samuel B. Roberts, damaged by a mine in 1988. A new class, Constellation (FFG-62), was ordered in 2020.
