1. Enterprise service bus
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
A middleware architecture in which applications connect to a central bus that routes, transforms and orchestrates messages between them; it was popular in large enterprises in the 2000s. Products included MuleSoft, IBM Integration Bus and TIBCO.
Example: Every system integrates through the ESB, so changing one XML schema requires the middleware team.
Closely tied to service-oriented architecture. Critics argue that ESBs became bottlenecks and accumulated business logic in the middle, which microservices avoid with "smart endpoints and dumb pipes". Cloud integration platforms took over much of the role.
2. Expeditionary Sea Base
Military · Naval Ship Abbreviations
Large, flexible US Navy ships built on a tanker hull that serve as floating bases for helicopters, special operations forces and mine countermeasures in places such as the Persian Gulf.
Example: USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB-3) served as a staging base for operations in the Gulf.
Starting with Lewis B. Puller, these ships were commissioned as warships so they could conduct a wider range of missions. They have large flight decks and mission bays. In awards, ESB also means Expert Soldier Badge.
3. Expert Soldier Badge
Military · Military Award and Decoration Abbreviations
Skill badge introduced by the Army in 2019 for soldiers outside the infantry, Special Forces and medical fields who pass a rigorous test of soldier skills comparable to the Expert Infantryman Badge.
Example: The signal sergeant was proud to earn the ESB alongside two cooks from his battalion.
The badge filled a gap by giving the rest of the Army a skills test equivalent to the EIB. Testing is administered by units following common standards. In naval usage, ESB means expeditionary sea base.
