CVN stands for Aircraft carrier, nuclear-powered, a naval ship abbreviation.
Hull classification for the US Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, including the Nimitz class and the newer Gerald R. Ford class (CVN-78). Each carries an air wing of dozens of aircraft and a crew of about 5,000 including the air wing.
Example: The CVN and its strike group moved into the Mediterranean.
Usage notes
The symbol is usually explained as C for cruiser, from early carriers' classification as cruiser-type ships, and V for heavier-than-air craft, with N for nuclear. USS Enterprise (CVN-65), commissioned in 1961, was the first nuclear carrier. Conventionally powered carriers were CVs.
