Honorary doctorate that American colleges award to philanthropists, artists, activists and public figures for contributions to society rather than for scholarship. It is one of the most frequently conferred honorary degrees at US commencement ceremonies.
Example: The college awarded an honorary LHD to the founder of the city's largest food bank.
Written L.H.D.; some schools use English word order, DHL. AP style says not to use "Dr." for people whose only doctorate is honorary, and most recipients use the degree only in ceremonial contexts. Universities usually announce honorary degree recipients alongside the commencement speaker.

Example: The LHD launched landing craft and Ospreys during the beach assault exercise.
The letters derive from "landing helicopter dock." These ships resemble small aircraft carriers and lead amphibious ready groups. USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) was scrapped after a destructive 2020 fire in San Diego.
