JCD stands for Juris Canonici Doctor (Doctor of Canon Law), a degree abbreviation.
Doctorate in Catholic canon law earned after the JCL with a dissertation, qualifying holders to teach canon law at pontifical faculties and to serve in senior roles at diocesan tribunals and the Roman Curia. Canonists with the JCD advise bishops on marriage, clergy and church property matters.
Example: The bishop asked a JCD from the Catholic University of America to advise on the parish merger.
Usage notes
Written J.C.D. Holders are often called canon lawyers, although canon law operates only within church structures and does not qualify anyone to practice civil law. The rarer JUD (Juris Utriusque Doctor), awarded by the Pontifical Lateran University, covers both canon and civil law.
