1. Tokyo Haneda Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
Tokyo's closer and busier airport, located on Tokyo Bay about 15 kilometers south of central Tokyo, and one of the busiest airports in the world. It is a hub for Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.
Example: Book the HND flight if you can; Narita adds an hour each way on the train.
ICAO code RJTT. Officially Tokyo International Airport. Haneda was mainly domestic after Narita opened in 1978, but long-haul international flights returned from 2010 onward. On January 2, 2024, a Japan Airlines A350 collided with a Coast Guard aircraft on landing; all 379 people on the airliner escaped before it burned, while five of six aboard the Coast Guard plane died.
2. Higher National Diploma
Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations
British vocational qualification at level 5 that usually takes two years of full-time study in subjects such as engineering, business, computing or hospitality. It is roughly equivalent to the second year of a bachelor's degree, and many holders "top up" to a full degree with one more year.
Example: After his HND in electrical engineering, he topped up to a BEng in a single year.
Awarded by Pearson under the BTEC brand in England and Wales and by the SQA in Scotland. HNDs are delivered mainly in further education colleges. Employers value them for practical skills, and some professional bodies grant partial exemptions to holders.
