1. Editors
Writing & Everyday · Citation and Bibliography Abbreviations
Plural of ed., placed after the names of two or more people who edited a collection, handbook or anthology. Edited volumes of essays by different authors usually list several editors.
Example: Gilbert, Sandra M., and Susan Gubar, eds. The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women. New York: Norton, 1985.
APA writes "(Eds.)" after the names. When citing one essay from an edited volume, the essay's author comes first, and the editors follow the book title, introduced by "edited by" or "ed." Some styles put the abbreviation in parentheses, as in "Gilbert and Gubar (eds.)," a form common in British publishing.
2. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS)
Medical · Neurology Abbreviations
Persistent difficulty staying awake and alert during the day, with unintended dozing or sleep episodes, despite adequate time in bed. Common causes include insufficient sleep, obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, depression and sedating medications.
Example: EDS with Epworth score 17 despite 8 hours in bed; sleep study ordered.
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores the likelihood of dozing in eight situations; a score above 10 indicates excessive sleepiness. Drowsy driving is a major safety concern, and clinicians may advise patients not to drive until EDS is treated. In genetics and rheumatology EDS means Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
3. Education Specialist (EdS)
Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations
Post-master's degree of about 30 credits that sits between a master's and a doctorate, commonly required for school psychologists and often earned by principals and superintendents seeking advanced licensure. Many districts place teachers with an EdS on a higher salary lane.
Example: The district's school psychologist position requires an EdS and state certification.
Written Ed.S. The National Association of School Psychologists treats specialist-level training of at least 60 graduate credits, including internship, as the entry standard for school psychology. Credits from an EdS can sometimes be applied toward an EdD at the same university.
