EDH stands for Epidural hematoma, a neurology abbreviation.
Bleeding between the skull and the dura, usually from a torn middle meningeal artery under a temporal bone fracture. On CT it appears as a lens-shaped (biconvex) collection that does not cross skull suture lines.
Example: Struck by a baseball, briefly lucid, now drowsy with a dilated left pupil; CT: 40 mL left temporal EDH, to OR.
Usage notes
The textbook "lucid interval," in which a patient is briefly alert before deteriorating, occurs in only a minority of cases. Because the bleeding is often arterial, the hematoma can enlarge quickly and compress the brain; prompt surgical evacuation leads to good outcomes in many patients. Also called extradural hematoma, especially in British usage.
