Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

Built on the transformer architecture and trained on vast amounts of text to predict the next token, an LLM can generate and summarize text, answer questions, translate and write code. GPT, Claude, Gemini and Llama are major LLM families.

Example: The support team uses an LLM to draft replies, but an agent approves every answer before it is sent.

Modern LLMs have billions to trillions of parameters and are refined after pretraining with instruction tuning and reinforcement learning from human feedback. They can produce fluent but false statements, called hallucinations, so outputs need checking. "Large" has no fixed threshold, and smaller models are sometimes called SLMs. In law, LLM, usually written LL.M., is the Master of Laws degree.

2. Legum Magister (Master of Laws)

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

One-year graduate law degree taken after a first law degree, either to specialize in areas such as tax, international or intellectual property law or, for foreign-trained lawyers, to learn American law. NYU and Georgetown run the largest US tax LLM programs.

Example: After practicing in Brazil, she earned an LLM at Columbia and sat for the New York bar.

Written LL.M. New York and a few other states let foreign-trained lawyers qualify for the bar exam through an LLM that meets specific requirements. The double L follows the Latin plural "legum" (of laws). For American JD holders, an LLM is mainly valuable in tax law.
