SLM stands for Small language model, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A language model with relatively few parameters, typically from a few hundred million to several billion, designed to run cheaply or on local devices such as phones and laptops. Microsoft's Phi and Google's Gemma families are examples.
Example: We run an SLM on the laptop so meeting notes are summarized without leaving the device.
Usage notes
SLMs trade broad knowledge for speed, privacy and low cost, and can rival larger models on narrow tasks after fine-tuning or distillation. The boundary between small and large is informal and keeps shifting as hardware improves.
