SOTA stands for State of the art, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
In AI research, the best published result on a benchmark or task at a given time. Papers routinely claim a "new SOTA" when a model beats previous scores.
Example: Our method achieves SOTA on three of the five reading-comprehension benchmarks.
Usage notes
The phrase is a fixture of paper abstracts and public leaderboards. Critics argue that chasing small benchmark gains encourages overfitting to test sets rather than real progress. Outside AI, "state of the art" simply means the most advanced current technology. Pronounced "SOH-tuh" or spelled out.
