t-SNE
Stands fort-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding
CategoriesTechnology & Computing

t-SNE stands for t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.

A nonlinear technique for visualizing high-dimensional data in two or three dimensions, placing similar points close together so clusters become visible. It is popular for exploring embeddings, single-cell genomics and image features.

Example: The t-SNE plot shows the customer embeddings forming five clear clusters.

Usage notes

Introduced by Laurens van der Maaten and Geoffrey Hinton in 2008. Distances between clusters and cluster sizes in a t-SNE plot are not meaningful, a common misreading, and results vary with the perplexity setting. UMAP (2018) is a faster alternative that better preserves global structure.
