1. Tube feeding

Medical · Nursing Abbreviations

Liquid nutrition delivered directly into the stomach or small intestine through a nasogastric, gastrostomy or jejunostomy tube, given as continuous, cyclic or bolus feeds. Orders list the formula, rate, goal and water flushes.

Example: TF Jevity 1.2 at 20 mL/hr, advance by 10 every 4 hours to goal 60.

Also called enteral nutrition (EN). Keeping the head of bed raised at least 30 degrees during feeds reduces aspiration. Routine gastric residual checks have been dropped in many ICUs after critical care nutrition guidelines advised against them. Dietitians calculate goal rates from calorie and protein needs.

2. The f***

Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations

Intensifier inserted into questions and exclamations, as in "what tf" or "tf is this?", expressing confusion, anger or surprise. Very common among Gen Z in texts and comments.

Example: Tf is wrong with this Wi-Fi tonight? It keeps dropping.

A shortened relative of WTF (what the f***), often used at the start of a question. Contains strong profanity in its full form, so keep it out of professional and school messages. In other contexts TF can mean task force or the TensorFlow software library.

3. Transcription factor

Science & Engineering · Genetics Abbreviations

Protein that binds specific DNA sequences and switches genes on or off by recruiting or blocking the machinery that copies DNA into RNA. Humans have roughly 1,600 transcription factors, which control development, cell identity and responses to signals.

Example: Overexpression of four TFs reprogrammed skin cells into pluripotent stem cells.

TF families are named for their DNA-binding structures, such as zinc fingers, homeodomains and helix-loop-helix motifs. Mutations in TFs underlie many developmental disorders and cancers; MYC and p53 are prominent examples. ChIP-seq maps where TFs bind across the genome.

4. TensorFlow

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

Google's open-source machine learning framework for building and training neural networks, with tools for deploying models on servers, phones and browsers through TensorFlow Lite and TensorFlow.js.

Example: The legacy model is written in TF 1.x, so port it to Keras before upgrading.

Released by Google Brain in November 2015 as the successor to its internal DistBelief system. TensorFlow 2.0 (2019) made the Keras API and eager execution the defaults. PyTorch overtook it in research during the late 2010s, though it remains common in production. In infrastructure code TF often abbreviates Terraform.

5. French Southern Territories

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

French territories in the southern Indian Ocean and Antarctica, including the Kerguelen and Crozet islands, with no permanent population and administration based in Saint-Pierre on Réunion. The alpha-3 code is ATF.

Example: The research vessel's crew list gives TF as the port of call for Kerguelen.

Scientists and military staff rotate through the bases. The .tf domain is open for general registration.

6. Total float

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the project's finish date, calculated as late start minus early start. Activities with zero total float are on the critical path.

Example: Landscaping has 15 days of TF, so it can absorb the nursery's delay.

Free float (FF), by contrast, is how long an activity can slip without delaying its immediate successor. Also called total slack.
