1. TypeScript
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
A programming language from Microsoft that adds static types to JavaScript and compiles to plain JavaScript, catching many errors before code runs. It is now the default choice for many large front-end and Node.js projects.
Example: Rewriting the API client in TS caught three bugs where we passed strings instead of numbers.
Released in 2012 under the lead of Anders Hejlsberg, the designer of C#. Files use the .ts and .tsx extensions, and its type system is structural and deliberately pragmatic rather than fully sound. In 2025 Microsoft announced a port of the TypeScript compiler to Go, promising builds about ten times faster.
2. Tourette syndrome
Medical · Neurology Abbreviations
Neurodevelopmental disorder with multiple motor tics and at least one vocal tic lasting more than a year, beginning before age 18. Tics typically peak in early adolescence and lessen in adulthood for many people.
Example: TS with eye blinking, shoulder shrugs and throat clearing since age 7; comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics recommended.
Named for French neurologist Georges Gilles de la Tourette, who described it in 1885. Involuntary swearing (coprolalia) affects only a minority, fewer than one in five patients in a large international study, despite its prominence in popular culture. ADHD and obsessive-compulsive disorder commonly coexist. Behavioral therapy is first-line, with medicines such as alpha-2 agonists or antipsychotics for disabling tics.
3. MPEG transport stream
Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations
Container format for audio, video and data designed for broadcasting over unreliable channels, used by digital TV standards such as DVB and ATSC and for recordings from TV tuners. HTTP Live Streaming also traditionally delivers video as .ts segments.
Example: The DVR saves recordings as TS files, which I convert to MP4 before editing.
Transport streams divide data into fixed 188-byte packets with error-recovery features, unlike the program stream used on DVDs. Blu-ray and AVCHD camcorders use a variant with 192-byte packets and the .m2ts extension. In programming, the .ts extension instead marks TypeScript source code, an unrelated use.
4. This s***
Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations
Refers to the current situation, object or piece of content, often with frustration, as in "ts pmo" or "ts so hard." Trending among Gen Z and Gen Alpha in 2024 and 2025.
Example: Ts so hard, I've been stuck on this level all night.
Can be negative or, less often, admiring ("ts fire"). In fan communities TS commonly means Taylor Swift, and in programming TypeScript, so check the context. Mildly vulgar and not for work or school.
5. Tennessine (Ts)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Tennessine (element 117) is the second-heaviest known element and a member of the halogen group, though it is predicted to behave more like a metal than iodine does. It was made in 2010 by bombarding a berkelium target from Oak Ridge with calcium-48 ions at Dubna.
Example: Like chlorine and iodine, Ts carries an -ine ending because it falls in group 17.
The discovery was a collaboration among the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Vanderbilt University, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and others. It was named in 2016 for the state of Tennessee, recognizing its contributions to superheavy element research. The temporary name was ununseptium (Uus).
