1. Test-driven development
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
A development practice in which the programmer writes a failing automated test before writing the code to make it pass, then refactors, repeating in short cycles called red-green-refactor. It aims to produce well-tested, modular code.
Example: We paired using TDD, so every function started life as a failing test.
Kent Beck rediscovered and popularized the technique in the late 1990s as part of Extreme Programming and described it in "Test-Driven Development: By Example" (2002). Studies of its benefits are mixed, and many teams write tests alongside code rather than strictly before it. ATDD, acceptance test-driven development, starts from acceptance criteria instead.
2. Total daily dose
Medical · Prescription Abbreviations
Sum of all doses of a drug given in 24 hours, used especially for insulin and opioids. In diabetes care the insulin TDD guides how much basal and mealtime insulin to prescribe.
Example: Estimated insulin TDD 0.5 units/kg/day; give half as basal glargine.
A common hospital rule of thumb starts insulin-naive adults with type 2 diabetes at 0.3 to 0.5 units/kg/day, split roughly 50/50 between basal and prandial insulin. For opioids, TDD is converted to morphine milligram equivalents when switching drugs or routes.
3. Time-division duplex
Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations
Method of two-way radio communication in which uplink and downlink share the same frequency, alternating rapidly in time. Many 5G mid-band networks, such as those on the 3.5 GHz band n78, use TDD.
Example: The 2.5 GHz 5G band is TDD, so the network can give most of the time slots to downloads.
TDD lets operators allocate more time to downloads, matching typical traffic, and uses unpaired spectrum efficiently. Neighboring TDD networks must synchronize their timing to avoid interfering with each other. China Mobile's large TD-LTE network and T-Mobile US's 2.5 GHz 5G band use TDD. In software, TDD means test-driven development.
