GHz stands for Gigahertz, an engineering unit abbreviation.

One billion hertz, the unit for processor clock speeds, Wi-Fi bands (2.4, 5 and 6 GHz), 5G networks and microwave ovens, which operate at about 2.45 GHz.

Example: The processor boosts up to 5.4 GHz on a single core.

Usage notes

Clock speed alone does not determine performance, since newer chips do more work per cycle. Desktop clocks have stayed largely between 3 and 6 GHz since the mid-2000s because power and heat rise steeply with frequency. Wi-Fi's 2.4 GHz band reaches farther, while the 5 and 6 GHz bands are faster over shorter range.
