1. Foot-candle
Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations
US unit of illuminance equal to one lumen per square foot, about 10.76 lux. American lighting designers, architects and greenhouse growers specify light levels in foot-candles.
Example: The design target is 50 fc on the lab's work surfaces.
The Illuminating Engineering Society publishes recommended foot-candle levels by task, roughly 30 to 50 fc for offices. Light meters sold in the US often show both fc and lux. The name refers to the light a standard candle casts on a surface one foot away.
2. Fulfillment center (FC)
Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations
Warehouse that stores inventory and picks, packs and ships individual online orders directly to consumers, often running around the clock with heavy automation.
Example: Amazon opened a new FC near the city, cutting delivery times to one day.
Fulfillment centers handle many small orders, unlike distribution centers that ship full cases and pallets to stores. Amazon popularized the term for its warehouses.
3. Friend code (FC)
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Unique number used to add friends on Nintendo consoles and some mobile games instead of a username. On the Nintendo Switch it takes the form SW-1234-5678-9012.
Example: Drop your FC below and I'll add everyone for the Animal Crossing island tour.
Nintendo's friend codes, used since the Wii and DS era, were criticized as clunky but intended to protect young players from strangers. Players post codes in forums and Discord servers to find friends. In football (soccer), FC means football club.
4. Fire Controlman (FC)
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Surface-ship technicians who operate and maintain weapons control systems, including the Aegis combat system, fire-control radars and the computers that direct missiles and guns against air, surface and land targets.
Example: FC1 Grant ran the Aegis system readiness test before the missile exercise.
Fire controlmen aboard Aegis cruisers and destroyers often specialize as Aegis FCs with long training pipelines. Fire Control Technician (FT) is the separate submarine counterpart. The rating name refers to controlling the "fire" of weapons, not to firefighting, which belongs to damage controlmen.
