UPDRS stands for Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, a neurology abbreviation.

Comprehensive rating scale for Parkinson's disease covering nonmotor experiences, motor experiences of daily living, a clinician-performed motor examination and motor complications such as dyskinesia. It is the standard measure of severity and progression in clinical trials.

Example: MDS-UPDRS part III score 32 off medication, 14 on: good levodopa response.

Usage notes

The original scale dates from 1987, and the Movement Disorder Society revised it in 2008 as the MDS-UPDRS, which is now preferred. Part III, the motor examination, is the most widely reported section and is used to measure response to levodopa before deep brain stimulation surgery. Hoehn and Yahr staging provides a simpler summary of disease stage.
