AChR stands for Acetylcholine receptor, a neurology abbreviation.
Receptor on muscle cells at the neuromuscular junction that responds to acetylcholine released by nerves; antibodies against it cause myasthenia gravis. AChR antibody testing is the first blood test for suspected myasthenia.
Example: AChR binding antibody 12.4 nmol/L: confirms seropositive myasthenia gravis; CT chest for thymoma.
Usage notes
AChR antibodies are found in about 85 percent of generalized and about half of purely ocular myasthenia; seronegative patients are tested for MuSK and LRP4 antibodies. Binding, blocking and modulating antibody assays exist. About 10 to 15 percent of people with myasthenia have a thymoma, so chest imaging follows a positive test.
