ACom stands for Anterior communicating artery, a neurology abbreviation.
Short vessel connecting the two anterior cerebral arteries at the front of the circle of Willis, allowing blood to cross between hemispheres. It is the most common site of ruptured intracranial aneurysms.
Example: CTA reveals a 6 mm ACom aneurysm as the source of the subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Usage notes
Also written AComm or AComA. Ruptured ACom aneurysms can damage the frontal lobes and basal forebrain, producing memory problems, confabulation and personality change. The circle of Willis provides collateral flow when a carotid artery is blocked, though its anatomy varies widely and is complete in only a minority of people.
