CategoriesMedical

TCDB stands for Turn, cough, deep breathe, a nursing abbreviation.

Postoperative nursing routine in which the patient changes position, takes several deep breaths and coughs to clear secretions and expand the lungs. It helps prevent atelectasis and pneumonia, especially after abdominal or chest surgery.

Example: TCDB q2h while awake, splint incision with pillow when coughing.

Usage notes

Hugging a pillow against the incision, called splinting, reduces pain and makes coughing more effective. TCDB is commonly paired with incentive spirometry and early walking. Care plans write C&DB when turning is not needed, for example in patients who already move well on their own.
