1. Venous air embolism

Medical · Anesthesia Abbreviations

Entry of air into the venous circulation, from where it can travel to the heart and lungs and cause low blood pressure, hypoxia and cardiac arrest. Risk is highest in sitting-position neurosurgery, where the operative site lies above the heart, and during central line insertion or removal.

Example: Sudden EtCO2 drop and hypotension during the sitting craniotomy: VAE suspected, field flooded.

Transesophageal echocardiography and precordial Doppler are the most sensitive detectors, and a sudden fall in end-tidal CO2 is a common sign. Management includes flooding the surgical field, stopping nitrous oxide and lowering the head. Central lines are removed with the patient lying flat or head-down. In ventilator care VAE means ventilator-associated event.

2. Variational autoencoder

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

A generative neural network that compresses data into a probabilistic latent space and learns to decode samples from that space back into realistic data. VAEs are used for image generation, anomaly detection and as the compression stage of latent diffusion models.

Example: The VAE compresses each 512-pixel image into a small latent before diffusion begins.

Introduced by Diederik Kingma and Max Welling in 2013. The "reparameterization trick" made the model trainable with ordinary gradient descent. VAE outputs tend to be blurrier than those of GANs or diffusion models, but their smooth latent spaces suit interpolation.
