1. Generative adversarial network

A generative model made of two neural networks trained against each other: a generator creates fake samples, such as images, and a discriminator tries to tell them from real ones, pushing the generator toward increasingly realistic output.
Example: The startup used a GAN to generate synthetic faces for testing its photo app.
Invented by Ian Goodfellow and colleagues in 2014. GANs produced the first photorealistic synthetic faces, popularized by NVIDIA's StyleGAN and the website "This Person Does Not Exist", and enabled early deepfakes. Training is notoriously unstable, and diffusion models largely replaced GANs for image generation from about 2021.
2. Gallium nitride (GaN)

Semiconductor material used in modern chargers and power adapters that switches power more efficiently than silicon, allowing much smaller, cooler chargers. Laptop and phone chargers labeled "GaN" pack 65 W or more into pocket-sized cases.
Example: The 100 W GaN charger is half the size of the laptop's original brick.
Anker released one of the first consumer GaN chargers in 2018, and the technology quickly spread across accessory makers. Gallium nitride was already important in electronics: efficient blue LEDs made from it earned Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. GaN transistors are also used in 5G base stations and electric-vehicle power systems.
