A family of large language models developed by OpenAI, and more broadly the design they share: a transformer network pre-trained on huge text corpora to generate text by predicting the next token, then refined for specific uses. ChatGPT runs on GPT models.
Example: The company rebuilt its help-desk bot on a GPT model and cut average handling time by 40 percent.
OpenAI released GPT-1 in 2018, GPT-2 in 2019, GPT-3 in 2020 and GPT-4 in 2023; ChatGPT launched on November 30, 2022, and reached an estimated 100 million users within about two months. The transformer comes from Google's 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need". Because the letters describe a general technique, other companies also use GPT in product names. In disk partitioning, GPT means GUID Partition Table.
2. GUID Partition Table

Disk partitioning scheme defined in the UEFI standard, supporting disks far larger than 2 TiB and, on Windows, up to 128 partitions by default. It keeps a backup copy of the partition table at the end of the disk.
Example: Initialize the new 8 TB drive as GPT, or Windows will only see 2 TB of it.
Every disk and partition receives a GUID, a 128-bit globally unique identifier. A "protective MBR" at the start of a GPT disk stops older tools from mistaking it for an empty drive. Macs and modern Linux installations use GPT as well. In artificial intelligence, GPT means generative pre-trained transformer, an unrelated term.
