SLAM stands for Simultaneous localization and mapping, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
The problem of building a map of an unknown environment while tracking the device's own position within it, solved with cameras, lidar and motion sensors. Robot vacuums, drones, self-driving cars and AR headsets rely on SLAM.
Example: The warehouse robots use lidar SLAM, so no floor markers are needed.
Usage notes
Research grew out of probabilistic robotics work in the 1980s and 1990s, with the acronym in use by the mid-1990s. Visual SLAM, which uses only cameras, underpins phone AR frameworks such as ARKit and ARCore. Loop closure, recognizing a place already visited, is the key step for correcting accumulated drift.
