Llama stands for Large Language Model Meta AI, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A family of large language models released by Meta, notable for making model weights available for download so developers can run and fine-tune them on their own hardware. Many open-weight derivatives are built on it.
Example: We self-host a fine-tuned Llama model so customer data never leaves our servers.
Usage notes
The first version, styled LLaMA, appeared in February 2023 for researchers, and its weights leaked online within about a week. Llama 2 (July 2023) and later versions came with a license permitting commercial use, with restrictions for very large companies. Because of those restrictions, the license does not meet the Open Source Initiative's definition, hence the term "open weights".
