KNN stands for K-nearest neighbors, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A simple machine learning algorithm that classifies a new data point by looking at the k most similar examples in the training data and taking a majority vote, or their average for regression. It needs no training phase but can be slow on large datasets.
Example: With k set to 5, KNN labels each new customer by its five most similar existing customers.
Usage notes
Described by Evelyn Fix and Joseph Hodges in 1951 and analyzed by Thomas Cover and Peter Hart in 1967. Results depend on the distance measure and on feature scaling. Also written k-NN. Approximate nearest neighbor search makes similar lookups fast in vector databases.
