LSTM stands for Long short-term memory, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A type of recurrent neural network cell with gates that decide what information to keep, update or forget, allowing it to learn dependencies across long sequences. LSTMs powered speech recognition, translation and handwriting recognition in the 2010s.
Example: Our demand forecast uses an LSTM trained on three years of daily sales.
Usage notes
Introduced by Sepp Hochreiter and Jürgen Schmidhuber in 1997 to address the vanishing gradient problem. Each cell has input, forget and output gates. Google's 2016 neural machine translation system was built from stacked LSTM layers before transformers took over.
