1. Maximum likelihood estimation
Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations · also used in technology
A method of estimating model parameters by choosing the values that make the observed data most probable. It is the foundation of logistic regression, survival models and many machine learning models.
Example: The MLE of a coin's heads probability after 62 heads in 100 flips is 0.62.
Ronald Fisher developed and popularized maximum likelihood between 1912 and 1922. Under broad conditions MLEs are consistent and approximately normal in large samples. In practice the log-likelihood is maximized, often numerically, because products of probabilities become sums. MLE can also refer to the resulting estimate itself.
2. Machine learning engineer
Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations
A software engineer who builds, deploys and maintains machine learning systems in production, handling data pipelines, training infrastructure, model serving and monitoring. The role bridges data science and software engineering.
Example: Hiring an MLE to move our fraud model from notebooks into a real-time service.
The title spread in the mid-2010s as companies found that research prototypes needed engineering to run reliably at scale. MLEs work closely with MLOps practices and tools. In statistics MLE means maximum likelihood estimation; job ads and team names point to the engineer meaning.
