HMCS stands for His Majesty's Canadian Ship, a naval ship abbreviation also used in transportation.
Canadian naval prefix placed before the names of commissioned Royal Canadian Navy vessels, as in HMCS Halifax. It changed from "Her" to "His" in 2022 after King Charles III became Canada's monarch.
Example: HMCS Ottawa sailed through the Taiwan Strait alongside a US destroyer.
Usage notes
Canada's navy was founded in 1910 and has used the Royal Canadian Navy name again since 2011. Its main surface combatants are Halifax-class frigates, to be replaced by new destroyers under the Canadian Surface Combatant program.
