1. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction
Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations
Temporary narrowing of the airways triggered by vigorous exercise, typically peaking 5 to 15 minutes after exertion and causing cough, wheeze, chest tightness or breathlessness. Cold, dry air and chlorinated pools are common triggers.
Example: Cough and chest tightness after cross-country runs; FEV1 fell 18% after exercise challenge: EIB.
Diagnosis is supported by a fall in FEV1 of at least 10 percent after an exercise or eucapnic voluntary hyperpnea challenge. It affects most people with asthma and occurs in many elite endurance and winter-sport athletes without asthma. An inhaled bronchodilator 5 to 20 minutes before exercise and a gradual warm-up help prevent it. The older term exercise-induced asthma (EIA) is discouraged because exercise is a trigger rather than a cause.
2. European Investment Bank
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
Lending institution of the European Union, owned by the member states, which finances infrastructure, climate, innovation and development projects in Europe and abroad. It is based in Luxembourg.
Example: The wind farm received a 400 million euro EIB loan.
Founded under the 1957 Treaty of Rome, it is one of the largest multilateral lenders in the world. It has branded itself the EU's "climate bank" and stopped financing most fossil fuel projects from 2022. It is separate from the European Central Bank and from the EBRD.
3. Expert Infantryman Badge
Military · Military Award and Decoration Abbreviations
US Army badge earned by infantry and Special Forces soldiers who pass a demanding test of infantry skills, including weapons, medical tasks, land navigation, fitness and a 12-mile foot march.
Example: Only a third of the candidates earned the EIB during testing week.
Created in 1943. It recognizes skill rather than combat; the CIB recognizes combat. Soldiers in other branches now have the Expert Soldier Badge and medics the Expert Field Medical Badge.
4. Exbibyte (EiB)
Units & Measurements · Data Unit Abbreviations
Exactly 2^60 bytes, about 1.153 exabytes. It defines theoretical limits in computing: a full 64-bit memory address space covers 16 EiB, and file systems such as ext4 support volumes up to 1 EiB.
Example: In theory, 64-bit addressing can reach 16 EiB of memory.
Real processors implement far fewer address bits; current x86-64 chips typically support 48 or 57 bits of virtual addressing, or 256 TiB and 128 PiB respectively. The prefix exbi- comes from exa plus binary, pronounced "EX-bee".
