EES stands for Entry/Exit System, a world government abbreviation.

Automated EU border system that registers non-EU travelers each time they cross the external borders of the Schengen area, recording fingerprints and a facial image and replacing manual passport stamping.

Example: Allow extra time at the airport on your first trip, since EES registration takes a few minutes.

Usage notes

The system began operating on October 12, 2025, with a phased rollout at border crossings over the following months. It applies to short-stay visitors, including British and US citizens, and tracks the limit of 90 days in any 180-day period. It is a prerequisite for ETIAS.
