V1 stands for Takeoff decision speed, an aviation abbreviation.
Speed on the takeoff roll beyond which the crew must continue the takeoff even if an engine fails, because there is no longer enough runway to stop safely. Calculated for each flight from weight, runway, weather and flap setting, it is called out aloud by the monitoring pilot.
Example: At "V1" the captain moved her hand from the thrust levers to the yoke, committed to flying.
Usage notes
Below V1 the crew rejects the takeoff for serious problems; above it they take the problem into the air. V1 can never exceed the rotation speed. Because high-speed rejected takeoffs carry their own risks, airlines train pilots to reject only for major failures as V1 approaches. Pronounced "vee one."
