UAV stands for Unmanned aerial vehicle, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation also used in transportation.
Aircraft without a pilot on board, flown remotely or autonomously, ranging from hand-launched quadcopters to large armed drones such as the MQ-9 Reaper. Militaries use them for surveillance and strikes.
Example: A UAV circled the compound for hours before the raid.
Usage notes
Unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) are armed versions. The US military increasingly says unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to include the ground station and data links, and the Air Force calls its large drones remotely piloted aircraft (RPA). "Drone" is the common informal word.
